Henry Parsons CrowellLast Tuesday Dennis O’Sullivan sent me the following write-up. In light of last Sunday’s Nov 3, 3, 2013 message about “Stewardship,” I’m copying this for you. You may find this very inspiring! Signed: Pastor Bill.

Henry Parsons Crowell—This is my favorite American icon who most people do not even know existed. Crowell was the founder of Quaker Oats Cereal. What I find fascinating about his life was this—he was born into a very affluent family, and could have avoided work his entire life if he so chose.

However, he had a religious fervor that I do not believe has a mainstream equivalent in American business today. With a strong belief in Jesus Christ, he believed that he had the moral imperative to work tirelessly and endlessly because he did not believe he could handle telling Jesus on his judgment day that he failed to reach his potential.

For the final four decades of his life, Crowell donated 70% of his personal and business profits to charity. However, because of his business savvy in running Quaker Oats, the profits kept increasing 15-20% per year, and he was able to die in Chicago in 1943 as one of America’s richest men, despite his almost comically high donation rate during the second half of his life. I find that remarkable—when Crowell was born, he could have chosen to indulge a life of Billy Madison-like leisure, never lifting a finger a day in his life. Instead, he built a breakfast juggernaut that continues to fund extensive charity work in America to this day.

If you get a chance, read the book about his life “The Cereal Tycoon.” He is one of the most impressive American businessmen who does not have the lasting reputation that he deserves

Join us this Sunday at 10am for Pastor Bill’s message entitled “God Bless America.

We are also pleased this Sunday to receive new members at Harlingen Reformed Church.  Please help us to welcome these friends into our Christian fellowship! And as we pray God’s blessings upon them as they worship and serve with us!

Join us this Sunday, November 17that 10am.  Pastor Bill will talking about a dinner party from long ago…
“Jesus Has Dinner with Zacchaeus”

Notes from Pastor Bill's Sermon:

  • It seems to me that Jesus was always getting in trouble by eating dinner w the wrong people.
  • Don't let your net worth be your self worth.
  • Don't let your valuables define your value.
  • No matter how small I feel, Jesus notices me.
  • No matter who ignores me, Jesus knows me.
  • The name "Zacchaeus" means "pure one".  Jesus's knows what Zacchaeus can become, regardless of who he is.
  • No matter what I've done, Jesus wants me.
  • No matter what others say about me, Jesus affirms me.

"For the son of man came to seek and save the lost." Luke 19:10

Nursery (Baby Bottle)Jul-Oct 2013 we reported : Help Needed in the Nursery:  As we begin our fall worship, with Sunday School beginning, we need help “staffing" our nursery.  It is very important for parents worshiping to be able to bring an infant or young toddler to a clean, staffed nursery.  It would be great to have 10 or 12 people sign up, thus having to take turns only 3 or 4 times a year.  PLEASE, let me know if I can put you on the list!  Many thanks!
